About Bushwhack Adventures, Inc.

Bushwhack Adventures came about as a way to promote adventure racing in central North Carolina. What better way to promote the sport than by organizing adventure races?!

Bushwhack Adventures strives to provide events that are navigationally challenging, fun to participate in, and affordable for more people. An emphasis will be placed on the co-ed 3-person team format, as well as events longer than sprint-length. However, format flexibility and shorter courses will also be offered in order to make events more accessible to new adventure racers.

Bushwhack Adventures events are sanctioned under the ARResources.org program. Bushwhack Adventures endorses the Participant Responsibility Model wherein participants take primary responsibility for their own safety. Participants are encouraged to acquire the skills and experience required to safely participate in all of the various activities that can be part of adventure racing. Participants are expected to be aware of their own limitations and exercise good judgement while still challenging themselves. Bushwhack Adventures will strive to provide participants with adequate information regarding the activities involved in it's events, while still retaining as much of the mystery and "adventure" that defines adventure racing.

Bushwhack Adventures owner Don Childrey has competed in adventure races ranging from local events in the Triangle like the 9-1-1 Adventure Challenge, to multi-day events like the AdventureXstream Expedition in Utah. He has experienced first-hand the things that make an adventure race a good or bad experience for racers. Combining that experience with intimate knowledge of the Uwharrie National Forest, he organized the first annual Gold Nugget Adventure Race in October 2006. After that, who knows what the future holds?
